VANCOUVER, British Columbia, February 5, 2008 – The Canadian Health Food Association will host 2008 Expo West, the largest trade show in Western Canada featuring all things natural and organic, April 3-6 at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Consumer interest in healthy products continues to grow. Today 71 per cent of Canadians use a natural health product (NHP) regularly and 77 per cent agree that NHPs can be used to promote health, according to an Ipsos-Reid study for Health Canada.
This appetite extends to food and beverage as well with 51.5 per cent of Canadian households purchasing an organic product in 2006, according to ACNielsen, and contributing to the more than $1 billion in retail sales of organic products in Canada in 2006, as per the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada.
CHFA President, Penelope Marrett, says, “Both the natural health product industry and organic agriculture have both shown double-digit growth in the past five years. CHFA Expo West will again be the leading source for retail buyers to identify the newest products and developments in these industries.”
In addition, consumers are increasingly demanding more environmentally sensitive and social conscious products in the marketplace and Expo West exhibitors will not disappoint as they will also be showcasing the latest additions to a growing range of green products.
Environmental awareness has also extended to Expo West, as the CHFA looks to lowering the environmental impact of staging its large events. New this year, exhibitors and attendees will have an opportunity to use a carbon calculator to calculate their travel and shipping impact for the event. They may then make a donation to Zero Footprint which will use the funds collected to purchase the corresponding amount of offsets involving the forestation project in British Columbia. This contribution not only combats climate change, but deforestation, biodiversity loss and watershed degradation.
As more Canadians discover the benefits of natural health products and turn to alternatives to achieve optimal health and quality of life, consumers will look to retailers and practitioners in natural health to provide the information, products and services they need in order to make choices that promote good health.
