Frutarom Offers Alina(TM) Omega-3 Oils For Shelf Stable, Heat-Treated Applications

North Bergen, New Jersey, June 25, 2007 – Laurent Leduc, Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Frutarom USA Inc., announced the immediate availability of Alina™, an innovative source of omega-3 fatty acids that provides improved flavor and shelf stability in heat-treated dairy, beverage and savory applications.

Omega-3 with Improved Flavor and Exceptional Stability

Mr. Leduc explained that Alina is a patented plant source of omega-3 fatty acids from Salvia seed and is derived through a natural extraction process. He said, “Alina has a more neutral flavor profile, allowing for fortification without negative taste or texture impact. Alina offers greater stability in baked goods, bread, dairy, cereal and wide range of beverage products such as health drinks. While it’s true that there are other vegetable sources of omega-3, such as flaxseed, canola (rapeseed) and walnuts oils, these sources are less stable toward oxidation.”

It was reported that Alina is easy to use, and can provide a substantial percentage of omega-3 to serving sizes. It is stable in pasteurization processes and also in baking. Mr. Leduc added that Alina’s odorless, neutral flavor and allergen free makes it ideal for children’s formulations.

Salvia Oil Contains More Than 50% Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)

ALA is unique to omega-3 oils, the essential fatty acids that belong to the group of polyunsaturated fatty acids, commonly known as PUFAs. ALA, along with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are important forms of omega-3 found in food. Once ingested, the body converts ALA partly to EPA and DHA. The health benefits of ALA are well documented and include a reduction in stroke risk, addressing ADHD conditions in children, improving cognitive function and supporting eye health.

ALA is known to improve omega-3/omega-6 balance in the diet. About 2 to 4 times more omega-6 than omega-3 constitutes a healthy diet. The current ratio is more like 20:1, representing an imbalance that according to many researchers is increasing and contributing to the rising rate of inflammatory disorders.
