Frontier Natural Products Co-op, long a leader in certified organic herbs and spices, just became the first U.S. company to offer organic Fair Trade certified spices from Sri Lanka, continuing the laudable fair-trade movement previously seen with coffee, chocolate, and other specialized products. The photo at left shows spice buyer Kai Stark with a Sri Lankan farmer; in keeping with fair-trade principles, Frontier is committed to building relationships with ecologically savvy producers and buying crops at a fair wage, which benefits growers and their communities while also protecting the earth. Frontier's 16 organic fair-trade spices will include Ceylon stick cinnamon and ground cinnamon; whole and powdered cloves; ginger root powder; whole and powdered mace; ground nutmeg; medium, coarse, and fine grind black pepper; white ground pepper; whole black peppercorns; whole white peppercorns; and turmeric root powder. And they're available in bulk, which keeps price and packaging down. Given that spices harbor all kinds of health benefits, it's another great reason to get cooking with these flavorful, fair-trade options.
