The new Twitter: Foursquare

Yes, I have yet another demand on you to join the social media revolution – something you may think you simply don’t have time for. I understand you might be more concerned about the cases of yogurt in the back inching towards their expiration dates but learning about and using the latest Internet craze Foursquare might just be more important.

“Foursquare is a mobile application that is a cross between a friend-finder, a social cityguide and a game that encourages users to explore their neighborhoods and rewards them for doing so,” according to “We do this by combining our friend-finder functionality and social city guide elements with game mechanics.” And for retailers, it’s a gold mine.

You can use the application to see who is in your store right now, know where those people shop regularly and offer deals to those people to keep coming back. And, I promise, it is incredibly easy.

Chances are, people are already “checking-in” to your store without you knowing it. To claim your venue (become the manager of your business), find it online and click “claim this venue.” Someone from Foursquare will contact you to confirm. After you’ve claimed it, offer specials to the mayor and discounts to those that come back a lot. Not only will you see your business grown online but you will at the register as well.

Have any questions on privacy, functionality or other best practices? I will respond to any questions in posted in the comments section below.
