Our wonderful Shared Services guy, Eric, is my resident vegan expert; in fact, I think he's the first vegan I met, way back when I first started at DL. So when I recently received a whole slew of vegan cookbooks in the mail, I turned to him to evaluate the best.
"I’m the type of person who normally copies a few recipes out of a cookbook and then gets rid of it," he told me, "but I have to say that Veganomicon and The Gluten-Free Vegan are keepers!" Both use unique combinations of animal-free foods to create delicious, healthy dishes that ANYONE would love to eat. I'm especially intrigued by the gluten-free cookbook, since gluten is such a big issue for a lot of people these days.
Although I'm an omnivore, I have really learned to love good vegan cooking; for me, it started when I wrote an article for DL on Angelica's Kitchen, a gourmet vegan restaurant in NYC, and tested the recipes; they were, and are, awesome, and I still make them. I also return again and again to this recipe for Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie, a massive and animal-product-free treat. No deprivation here! In fact, what I've learned about vegan cooking is that it's not only ethically sound; when done with flair and innovation, it's super tasty and healthy.
