According the Organic Consumers Association, candy bar giant Mars has committed to sourcing 100,000 metric tons of cocoa from producers certified by the Rainforest Alliance. The certification is a step toward sustainability in that it assesses a farm's commitment to environmental, social, and ethical standards. The company says it's aiming to certify its entire cocoa supply by 2020. The first Rainforest Alliance-certified chocolate will appear in Galaxy Chocolate product, which is sold in the UK and Ireland, in 2010. Mars does not source nongenetically modified sugar or organic, fair trade-certified chocolate.
