Serenity and the holidays—mutually exclusive?

chill-final.jpgIs it possible to maintain balance and health during the holidays? Most days, I think not. Today, after a marathon morning of clearing snow, driving 2 kids to different schools miles apart, and then having my mouth abused by the dental hygienist, I'm pleasantly surprised to feel relatively even-keeled despite the mounting must-dos. Why? It could be because I snuck a 20-minute meditation session yesterday, between meetings. (I committed to meditating 10 minutes per day back in August and fell off around mid-October. It's been spotty since.) Meditation doesn't solve problems, but I am less reactive (less likely to compound stressful situations) and calmer when I am able to sit down and just breathe, mindfully, for 10-20 minutes—proof that small acts of self-care do pay off.

Kate Hanley, a.k.a. Her newsletter today seemed absolutely right on. The message: Take self-care moments wherever you can get them, even if they don't seem very big.

There is no such thing as a proper meal for squirrels during the wintertime. They get by on eating a teeny little nut here and there. They are a great inspiration for how to take care of yourself during the holidays—take whatever little tidbits you can find and trust that they will carry you through until you've got the opportunity to gorge on long, luxurious sessions of self-care again.

So what act or nugget of self-care will you nourish yourself with today?
