Rejoice! Eating 4.46 Hershey kisses every day may be good for your ticker. And we’re not talking pseudo-sweet, dark chocolate kisses. We mean the milk chocolate nuggets of bliss that melt in your mouth like disappearing memories of your loveliest dream. Research published by the British journal Heart linked eating 100 grams of dark OR milk chocolate a day to a lowered risk of heart disease and stroke. (Each kiss weighs about 22.42 grams.)
Eating chocolate regularly was linked to a 11-percent lower risk of any episode of cardiovascular disease and a 25-percent lower risk of associated death, according to the research.
The research was based on the EPIC-Norfolk study, which includes nearly 21,000 British adults. Scientists monitored the subjects for nearly 12 years, using food frequency and lifestyle questionnaires--not the most accurate tools, admit the researchers, but still, they say, the results are noteworthy, according to a release by the British Medical Association.
Previous studies have noted the healthy benefits of eating flavonoid-packed dark chocolate. "This is one of the first to include milk chocolate in the research,” wrote the study’s authors.
And for ye who doubt, they also conducted a review of other published studies, including 130,000 people in total, and said they found a similarly healthy link among regular chocolate eaters.
"Cumulative evidence suggests that higher chocolate intake is associated with a lower risk of future cardiovascular events," the authors concluded.
