Too much and you might not remember what you did last night, but just the right amount of red wine might help improve your memory. A new study suggests that resveratrol, the compound found in red wine and dark chocolate, may improve memory.
The research is the first to show a link between the red wine compound and cognition in overweight adults, Veronica Witte, a neuroscientist at the Charite - Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany, told thehindubusinessonline.com. The study was published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
To test the effects of the compound on memory, researchers gave 46 people who were overweight, but otherwise healthy, 200 mg of resveratrol daily for six months, while 46 other subjects received a placebo. At the beginning and end of the six months, subjects took memory tests, gave blood samples and had their brains scanned with MRIs, which examined blood flow related to brain activity.
After six months, the people who had been taken the resveratrol were able to remember more words on a list they’d been shown 30 minutes earlier. Additionally, brain scans revealed more communication within the hippocampus, part of the brain related to memory. Blood tests of these subjects also showed reduced levels of a blood sugar marker.
“From a clinical point of view, our findings suggest that regular, high-level intake of resveratrol in the elderly may convey protective effects on cognitive functions, a hypothesis that now needs to be evaluated in large-scale clinical trials,” said Witte in thehindubusinessonline.com.
If you’re vigilant about your red wine and dark chocolate consumption, or are simply under 40 and can still remember things that happened farther back than last week, you may recall recent controversy over a University of Barcelona and Johns Hopkins University study published last month in JAMA Internal Medicine, that questioned the health benefits of resveratrol.
