New research suggests taking the supp every day may speed up visual processing speed, the speed at which our eyes and brain communicate, by 20 percent after four months. Couch potatoes could also benefit from the research, as visual processing speed decreases with age and degenerative disease.
Zeaxanthin has been studied for its ability to protect against macular degeneration. Its role in human performance is relatively new, according to Dr. Billy Hammond, the author of the new study and lead vision sciences researcher at the University of Georgia. The research is unique because it’s the first time researchers have been able to speed up visual processing speed using dietary zeaxanthin as a nutritional approach, he told healthgauge.com.
The University of Georgia’s Vision Sciences Laboratory in the Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Public Library of Science (PLOS ONE) published the research. It was presented at the 7th Annual Collegiate and Professional Sports Dieticians Association conference in Point Clear, Alabama.
A previous study showed evidence that dietary zeaxanthin improved vision in night driving and fine detail among older subjects. That study, conducted among people with age-related macular degeneration, was published in the Journal of Optometry.
