BENEO-Orafti Launches Its Newest Ingredient - Orafti L58 Organic

A worldwide pace-setter in providing all-natural, functional and formulations-friendly fiber ingredients to the food, beverage and nutritional supplement industries, BENEO-Orafti is set to launch a new entry in its already multi-capable product line in the United States, called Orafti®L58 Organic.

BENEO-Orafti is well known in the US food industry for its inulin and oligofructose products derived from chicory. Now it is proud to launch its newest trend-savvy innovation, a liquid organic fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) which has received organic certification from BCS Öko, Germany, under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards. Produced from organic sugar, L58 Organic offers the key technical and nutritional properties food producers have come to expect from Orafti® ingredients. Production samples of L58 Organic are currently available to US food producers, with full production planned to supply the US market from October 2009 onward.

L58 Organic is newsworthy because it is organic, but that designation would mean little if the product did not share the many healthy, functional and useful technical properties for which Orafti® ingredients have become known.

As the world’s most researched prebiotics, Orafti® inulin and oligofructose have proven to selectively stimulate beneficial bifidobacteria in the colon, resulting in lifelong benefits related to digestive health. Orafti® ingredients also impart all the benefits of dietary fiber while contributing to excellent taste and texture in a wide range of food and beverage applications, such as: sugar reduction in cereal bars, ice cream, chocolate and cookies; fat replacement in ice cream and meat-based products; and textural improvement in low-fat spreads, mousses, yogurts and more.

L58 Organic, specifically, has both nutritional and technical functionalities. It can be used as a prebiotic fiber, promoting good digestive health and it can be used to replace sugar in applications like: yogurt, ice cream, breakfast cereals and cereal bars, as well as baked goods such as sponge cake and other bakery products.

- Food manufacturers looking for organic ingredients with even more health benefits could alternatively opt for Orafti®Synergy1, an oligofructose-enriched inulin.* Studies have shown that supplementation with as little as 8 grams per day of Orafti®Synergy1 can increase calcium absorption by as much as 20%. Further studies have demonstrated that it also helps increase bone mineral density in adolescent girls, which has important implications for bone health later in life.

* The use of Synergy 1 in US organic products is covered by its listing under the generic term "Inulin-oligofructose enriched (CAS # 9005–80–5)" under 7CFR § 205.606 of the US organic regulations. § 205.606 is a positive list of non-organically produced agricultural products allowed as ingredients up to an amount of 5% in processed products labeled as organic.
