Sunflower Farmers Markets Secures $30 Million in Funding for Rapid Growth PCG Capital Partners Leads Funding as Company Looks to Increase Numbers of New Stores
Boulder, CO [December 17, 2007] -- Sunflower Farmers Markets, a Boulder, Colorado-based grocery chain founded and led by Wild Oats founder Mike Gilliland, announced today it has raised $30 million in equity financing from PCG Capital Partners, a private equity firm based in La Jolla, CA.
The funding comes in advance of a major expansion of the company’s retail locations in both existing and new geographic markets. Plans include doubling the number of stores by the end of 2009. Sunflower will launch new locations at a rate of up to eight stores per year, creating a company portfolio of 50 stores throughout the West within five years.
Sunflower, founded in 2002, currently operates 13 stores in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada. The company’s increasingly popular format offers consumers a full-service farmers’ market-style grocery store featuring the highest quality natural and organic products at the lowest possible prices.
Mike Gilliland, Sunflower’s Founder and CEO, said, “Our value-driven approach to the natural foods retailing sector has clearly resonated with consumers. There is tremendous demand for an alternative to the high price format that has predominated in natural foods for so many years. Sunflower, offering ‘Serious Food at Silly Prices,’ fills a genuine need in the marketplace. PCG Capital Partners’ investment will enable us to make this differentiated retailing approach available to millions of consumers throughout the Western United States, including new markets in Utah and Texas.”
Tim Kelleher, Managing Director of PCG Capital Partners, said, “We are excited to partner with a proven entrepreneur like Mike Gilliland. We believe that Mike and his team have built a model that uniquely combines value with quality in the natural and organic foods segment. The concept has proven itself over 13 stores in four states. We anticipate our capital will enable Sunflower to capitalize on its success by replicating the model across many additional markets.”
Agility Partners, LLC, a Sacramento-based investment advisory group specializing in food and consumer products, advised Sunflower Farmers Markets on the transaction and was instrumental in structuring a transaction that served the needs of all parties

Natural Foods Chef Program addressing growing need for healthful cooking
|
|
|
DENVER, CO. – – Responding to rising demand for made-at-home meals that not only taste good but also promote wellness, a new program by the Nutrition Therapy Institute Inc. (NTI) of Denver is training natural foods chefs to cook food for optimum health and as proactive therapy for specific illnesses and conditions.
“The state of our country’s overall health has deteriorated over the past 25 years with the change in eating patterns from the farm to a fast-food culture,” said Char Leberer, the institute’s director and founder. “This intensive professional training program addresses the growing need for healthy food cooked at home.”
The 16-week course will produce its first group of graduates in December. Enrollment is currently under way for a new course starting Feb. 4, 2008.
“One of the primary goals of a natural foods chef is to help clients reestablish relationships with food that emphasize its health-building qualities,” said Leberer, a naturopath and nutritionist who founded the institute eight years ago to teach holistic nutrition from a broad base core principals, scientific information and real-life situations.
The new Natural Foods Chef program differs from traditional personal chef training by providing a unique combination of holistic nutrition, the study of health conditions, in-depth instruction in professional cooking skills, and business training, says Lynda Lacher, chef instructor, personal chef and graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Program.
“The natural foods personal chef uses whole foods, which are unadulterated, unrefined foods as close to the natural source as possible,” Lacher said. “We then stress the techniques of cooking them and making them taste good.”
The Natural Foods Chef program teaches students the basic nutrients, how they function in the body, and how they can be applied as therapy for certain illnesses and conditions, whether digestive disorders, weight management, detoxification, allergies, celiac disease, blood sugar disorders, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Using a variety of cooking methods, students are taught to create dishes using organic and locally grown produce and fresh herbs whenever possible, as well as meat, fish and dairy products that are organic or free-range/vegetarian-fed. They also learn to cook with substitutes to accommodate food sensitivities and allergies to things like gluten and dairy products. Upon completing the program, graduates receive a certificate as a Natural Foods Chef, as well as the knowledge required to become nationally certified as personal chefs.
Students can then become professional personal chefs cooking therapeutic meals for clients and teach them how to cook healthy meals in their own homes, caterers of healthy meals for events, consultants with restaurants in health-based menu planning, cooks for small personal entertainment events, and managers of health food restaurants and delis.
For more information on the Natural Foods Chef program, go to www.ntischool.com, email nti@ntischool.com or call 303-377-3974 or 866-377-3974.
Founded in 1999 by naturopath Char Leberer, the Nutrition Therapy Institute (NTI) is a private holistic nutrition school currently serving about 150 students with state-of-the-art academic programs in natural foods cooking, nutrition therapy and herbal therapy. Located near Denver’s City Park and housed in an historic home surrounded by a community garden, the institute and its faculty serve as national resources for education in holistic nutrition.

New Products Launch Pad goes live
|
|
|
Boulder, CO (April 19, 2006) — New Hope Natural Media announced today the launch of the New Products Launch Pad (http://www.nplp.com/), a new online new products portal for the natural products industry.
The New Products Launch Pad ("NPLP") enables manufacturers, marketers and suppliers of VMS, natural, organic and specialty products to introduce and promote their new product offerings to natural, specialty & VMS retailers via the internet.
"We did our research and asked natural products retailers what the market was missing and what tools they could use. What we found was that a significant communication disconnect exists between manufacturers and retailers when it comes to new products. If you manage a small independent store, you don't get enough attention from your vendors. And if you're a large store or chain, you get too much attention. The New Products Launch Pad aims to put information and power back into the hands of retailers when they want it," said Fredrik Linder, President of New Hope Natural Media.
NPLP offers retailers and purchasing agents instant, easily accessible information about the newest products and ingredients via http://www.nplp.com/ and allows them to immediately connect and communicate with the manufacturers of those products.
For more information about the New Products Launch Pad, go to: http://www.nplp.com/About.aspx

Albee Joins Metzger Associates
|
|
|
Applies hybrid high-tech strategy to natural products industry BOULDER, Colo., - One of the nation’s first high-tech public and investor relations firms is diversifying into new areas, including natural products. “This may sound funny, but the natural products industry has been driven by a micro market of risk-taking early adopters and is now poised before millions of consumers. These new buyers are more risk-averse, but open to learning how innovative products can improve their lives – just like the high-tech industry of the early ‘90s,” said CEO and founder John Metzger. “We are applying our expertise to this emerging market, centered right here in Boulder, and we’re very pleased to announce that one of the best ‘hybrid’ practitioners in the country, Doyle Albee, has joined our team.” From directing communications for storage giant Maxtor Corp. and one of the largest IPOs of the late ‘90s to award-winning beverage campaigns for Coors Brewing Company and several bottled water brands, Albee has since integrated his own practice into Metzger Associates, serving a variety of tech, cable telecommunications and natural products clients including The Cable Center, Silicon Mountain Memory, Thanasi Foods, Gold Systems, The Scotty Group, Xtreme Performance Nutrition and Nutballz Snack Foods. In addition, Albee will continue to provide pro-bono public relations services to a number of organizations, including CSIA and Cable Positive. Serving national clients since 1991, Boulder-based Metzger Associates is the Rocky Mountain region’s largest technology public relations and investor relations firm.

Carbsense Foods, Inc. Changes Name to Eat Well Be Well Foods, Inc.
|
|
|
Renews Focus on Sugar-free products for the Prevention of Diabetes and Obesity Carbsense Foods, Inc., a well established sugar-free foods source for diabetic and weight-conscious consumers, has changing its name to Eat Well Be Well Foods, Inc., effective April 1, 2005. The name better reflects the company’s position as the leading innovator and provider of genuinely healthy, great-tasting foods that assist in the prevention and management of diabetes and combat obesity. “Our new name conveys to consumers that our products are not part of a fad weight loss program that comes and goes, rather they are staples that allow you to maintain a healthy diet for a lifetime,” says Jim Keller, president of Eat Well Be Well Foods, Inc. “This company was founded to provide foods that truly benefit people battling weight issues and confronting diabetes. We are personally attached to this struggle since one of our three founders is a diabetic. We remain committed to not only providing healthy alternative food sources, but also to making sure consumers view us as their partner in this cause. The Eat Well Be Well name will assist us in effectively communicating this message.” Unlike other companies that claim to provide healthy, sugar-free products, Eat Well Be Well (EWBW) offers a variety of food products that are both sugar-free and do not contain sugar-alcohols that are commonly known to cause intestinal discomfort and can adversely affect diabetics. And because the products taste great, they are also a healthy food alternative for food lovers, in general, looking to manage blood glucose levels and maintain a healthy body.
