Contract Manufacturers Report Mixed Results

GMPs could encourage more brand manufacturers to outsource production.

Like other segments of the dietary supplement industry, contract manufacturers experienced a mixed year in 2003. Large contract manufacturers producing private-label products for mass market retailers saw flat or declining sales in most categories. Publicly held Perrigo Co. (Allegan, Mich.) reported dietary supplement sales declined to $144.2 million for the year ending June 30, 2003 from $150.2 million in the prior year.
