Fish oil, Omega-3 suppliers hook into a lucrative market

U.S. demand leads global growth; recent reports of contaminated fish drive consumers towards supplements.

Demand for fish oil supplements has risen sharply in the U.S. over the past year, spawned by growing consumer awareness of health benefits associated with omega-3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish such as salmon or mackerel.

"Demand is booming, and the boom is basically in the U.S.," said Baldur Hjaltason, USA director of sales for EPAX at Pronova Biocare in Norway, a leading global supplier of omega- 3 concentrates.
