Kerry buys ingredients biz
UK- and Dutch-based Quest Inter-national, a part of the ICI Group, has reached an agreement to sell its food ingredients business to Kerry for $440 million. Quest says the move will enable it to focus on expanding its core markets of flavour and fragrance. The ingredients business includes emulsifiers, proteins, hydrocolloids, yeast, enzymes and fermented ingredients.

The sale, expected to be complete by the second quarter of 2004, is subject to regulatory approvals and employee consultation. More than 900 Quest employees at nine sites in Europe, the US and Asia will be transferred to Kerry.

Mushroom extract put to test
A proprietary medicinal mushroom extract made by The Tradeworks Group in Vermont has been granted an investigational drug number by the Food and Drug Administration in conjunction with a human clinical study on breast cancer.

The extract is marketed in North America under the trade name MaitakeGold 404. The multi-phase study will last three years.

Searchable starches
A new website by Cerestar Food & Pharma Specialties Europe offers a searchable database on speciality starch products and technology. Visitors at can request further information on ingredients technology or product samples.

Headquartered in Belgium, Cerestar is a business unit of Cargill and one of Europe?s leading manufacturers of starch derivatives.

An angel in disguise
Massachusetts? Pioneer Nutritional Formulas has donated more than 4,500 bottles of its vitamin and mineral supplements to the nonprofit Vitamin Angel Alliance, which provides health education and nutritional supplements to needy communities around the world. Pioneer has also donated 1,500 bottles of its B-Complex Stress Formula, valued at $52,000, to the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Oregon, which will distribute them to inner-city clinics.

Blue ribbon for OptiBerry
Nutrition Business Journal has given a Product Merit Award to OptiBerry, InterHealth Nutraceuticals? multiple-berry anthocyanin extract. OptiBerry was formulated to provide optimum antioxidant and anti-angiogenic potency, to help maintain DNA integrity and inhibit the growth of blood vessels in tumours.

New CEO at Omega Biotech
Omega Biotech has tapped Murray Persicke to become its new president and CEO. Persicke first joined the company as chief financial officer and operating officer in July 2003. Founded in Canada in 1991, Omega Biotech is a manufacturer of antioxidant formulas; its branded products include Omage a Transdermal Antioxidant Cream, Omegavin Plus and Astringency Reduced Protovin BQ.

Fish oil earns gras status
Ocean Nutrition Canada has achieved GRAS status by the Food and Drug Administration for its omega-3 powder fish oil ingredient. A privately held company in Nova Scotia, Ocean Nutrition manufactures marine-based ingredients for the supplements and functional foods markets.

Hain Celestial goes non-dairy
The Belgian subsidiary of the Hain Celestial Group is purchasing Natumi, a German producer of non-dairy beverages and desserts marketed to retail channels across Europe.

The acquisition will add Natumi?s Milkfree brand to the Hain Celestial portfolio and give the company the ability to produce its own non-dairy beverages and desserts.

Creapure ready for CGMPs
Degussa Food Ingredients has announced that its branded creatine monohydrate, Creapure, is in compliance with the proposed new Food and Drug Administration rules for dietary supplement Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP). The company is also now able to manufacture special grades of Creapure that satisfy the stricter requirements. The final FDA rule on CGMPs is expected in the next year. Degussa Food Ingredients is a business unit of the multinational Degussa Corp.

Cyvex chooses new sales chief
Charlene Lee has been appointed director of marketing and sales for Cyvex Nutrition. She will coordinate all marketing for the company as well as handle media relations. Prior to her appointment, she was brand manager at ConAgra Foods, where she helped launch new products. Based in California, Cyvex has developed nutraceutical ingredients since 1984.
