In recent years, Korea has acknowledged the very important role that ‘health functional food’ can play in the prevention of chronic disease. This has led to a new classification of health functional food (nutritional products) as defined by The Health Functional Food Act of August 26, 2003. In January 2004 this new legislation went into effect, making Korea only the second country in the world to have a regulatory structure for health functional food—Japan of course being the first.
