Cognis Nutrition & Health is making it easy to add the cholesterol-lowering benefits of plant sterols to foods, beverages and dietary supplements with the launch of Vegapure® F 90 ME. The new, non-GM ingredient features an active sterol content of more than 85 percent, one of the highest sterol concentrations on the market for water-dispersible formulations. Vegapure® F 90 ME offers significant economical advantages because the excellent product stability and free-flowing properties mean it can be easily formulated without lumping or dusting into baked good, cereals, nutrition bars, dairy applications as well as 2-piece hard shells and tablets.
This innovative solution was developed by the research and technical team at Cognis, the world’s largest producer of natural plant phytosterols. To demonstrate how its heart health ingredients can be used in a broad range of applications, Cognis invites attendees at SupplySide West to visit booth #23025 to sample a drinkable yogurt, Guava H2O, and gummies – all made with Vegapure® natural phytosterols.
Until now, the choice of phytosterols for these foods would have been either ground free sterols or plant sterol esters with a fatty acid content of approximately 40 percent. Free sterols have a high melting point of approximately 140°C and are normally ground to a very small particle size. However, in foods, they have the disadvantage of lumping, dusting and reluctance to disperse in water. Cognis, a global leader in plant sterol processing, has solved these problems by using a special process and formulating the free sterols with skimmed milk powder to yield a free-flowing and water-dispersible formulation.
“Traditionally sterols have presented some formulating challenges such as gritty mouth feel and lumping upon dispersion,” said Sharrann Simmons, Senior Marketing Manager, Cognis Nutrition & Health. “This new, versatile ingredient makes it easy and convenient for manufacturers to add heart health benefits to products ranging from beverages to confectionery to supplements without adversely affecting the sensory characteristics of the product.” With this new innovation, Ms. Simmons pointed out that plant sterols can now be added to many functional food applications to help consumers manage their cholesterol levels through dietary choices rather than prescription drugs.
She also explained that Cognis is vigorously promoting Vegapure® ingredients to consumers under the Heart Choice™ brand. Several co-branding programs are underway and more consumers are visiting the website, www.heart-choice.com, each month.
