Even with abs of steel, without healthy joints life can be miserable. Just ask the Tin Man. Aging boomers seeking edible WD-40, athletes striving for an edge – and longevity, postmenopausal women dealing with changes and a heavier America putting more stress on its collective joints, all ensure continued growth in this category. Nutrition Business Journal predicts sustained growth will push the category to $1.717 billion in 2014, up from $1.673 billion this year and $1.639 billion in 2012.
A few industry insiders gave us the scoop on the supplemental equivalent of the Tin Man’s oilcan.
Fi: Where do you see emerging opportunities in this sector?
Answer: Bergstrom Nutrition’s branded ingredient OptiMSM continues to grow as major products recognize the value of utilizing ingredients that are not only branded, but are from manufacturers that provide consistent quality and support their ingredients with peer-reviewed and published research. While OptiMSM is a highly recognized and utilized ingredient in the traditional joint-health category, new opportunities are emerging in sports nutrition and exercise recovery with a heightened awareness among younger populations regarding the benefits of preventative care.

Fi: What’s going on with ingredient research?
Answer: We now have data suggesting MSM not only reduces expression of cartilage-damaging inflammatory cytokines by influencing NF-kB signaling, it also increases overall antioxidant capacity and defense. This suggests MSM is providing protection through multiple mechanistic pathways. Studies suggest OptiMSM may have a protective effect for cartilage, and may increase overall range of motion, reduce muscle soreness following exercise, and increase the body’s antioxidant capacity. This evidence suggests MSM may have a profound impact on overall mobility, which ultimately is the goal of supporting joint health.

Answer: Joint health will get a big boost in the athletic market. It’s no secret that athletes push their bodies beyond their limits in order to succeed. Along with other sports supplements, athletes will look for natural supplements to strengthen and soothe their joints and bones after intense use. We offer two ingredients highly sought after in the natural joint-health supplements industry: Yucca schidigera and turmeric. Turmeric has been known to show pain-relieving properties.
According to a study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 107 people with knee osteoarthritis were given curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, and compared its pain-relieving properties to ibuprofen. The study showed turmeric was just as effective as ibuprofen at relieving pain. The article said that Yucca schidigera has saponins and polyphenolics that are believed to help treat and prevent arthritis. The polyphenolics in Yucca schidigera include resveratrol and yuccaols, and are believed to fight off free radicals and inhibit inflammation-causing enzymes.
