New Omega-3 Tests Highlight Industry Success

The recent announcement by that omega-3 supplements are free from toxicants and other contaminants highlights the success that the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) and its predecessor, the Omega-3 Working Group of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN Working Group), have had in its efforts to continually improve quality in the industry.

Industry analysts have attributed the successful results to advances in refining techniques like the introduction of molecular distillation, activated carbon and other new processing steps into omega-3 oil refining. “When the industry came together in 2001 to establish what is now the GOED Voluntary Monograph, their efforts and the widespread adoption of these minimum quality standards has directly led to the success of these recent tests,” said Adam Ismail, Executive Director of GOED, “and the industry’s adoption of the Voluntary Monograph has encouraged the integration of these new technologies.”

The origins of the Monograph are now seven years old, and in that time the market has continued to experience high annual growth rates in part due to the high level of trust consumers have in omega-3 products. In fact, the US market for EPA and DHA supplements, functional foods and pharmaceuticals is more than 18 times the size it was in 2001. “One of GOED’s primary missions is to constantly increase quality in the industry and instil a high level of trust in the consumers mind through these efforts, we have a robust quality program planned in coming years that we believe will continue to contribute to further growth in all segments,” continued Ismail.

GOED congratulates the industry on its efforts and success in the quality arena.
