Triarco Industries announced new clinical findings which suggest Aminogen® may help support measures of cardiovascular health, such as cholesterol and triglyceride levels. An earlier clinical study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, found that Aminogen® significantly lowered C ‐ reactive protein (CRP), an indication of cardiovascular inflammation, by 10 percent. Taken together, Triarco scientists say these results may position Aminogen® as a strong player in the booming cardiovascular health market.
“Aminogen® has already been shown to triple the rate of protein absorption,” said Triarco Director of Research and Development Dr. Mark Anderson. “What’s exciting about this new research is we’re finding there may be benefits that extend beyond that. These results are not only good news for consumers who already take Aminogen® with their protein supplements, but for anyone who is looking for new ways to support heart health.”
While Aminogen® is typically used to increase rates of protein absorption and raise amino acid levels from whey protein products, this latest study looked at the effects of cardiovascular parameters including total cholesterol, HDL and LDL, and triglycerides.
The double‐blind, randomized trial matched forty healthy men, aged 18‐45, according to body weight, age and resistance training and divided them into two groups. The first group was given 100 grams of whey protein four times each week. The second group received 100 grams of whey protein with 3 grams of Aminogen® four times each week. Cholesterol and triglyceride levels were checked at the onset of the study and again after four weeks.
The results show that the two groups experienced significantly different changes in LDL and total cholesterol. The group not taking Aminogen® had an increase in LDL of 18.7 percent and a decrease in HDL of 12.3 percent, whereas the group taking Aminogen® had a decrease in LDL of 1.9 percent and an increase in HDL of 1.6 percent. Triglyceride levels also increased 3.4 percent more in the group not taking Aminogen®.
“These differences could be important to someone who takes whey protein with Aminogen® to support weight management, since cardiovascular health is commonly sited as motivation for weight loss,” said Dr. Anderson.
With one‐third of Americans ‐ some 80 million people ‐ suffering from some form of cardiovascular disease, ingredients and supplements for heart health have never been more in demand. In Europe and the U.S., sales of heart healthy foods and drinks alone are expected to reach $8 billion this year (Business Insights). Aminogen’s GRAS status for protein foods and beverages allows manufacturers to formulate the patented enzyme system with a wide range of protein products, in addition to traditional supplements.
Aminogen® is the patented enzyme system designed to improve protein digestion and increase amino acid levels absorbed from dietary protein. Aminogen’s ability to break down protein can also lead to the reduction or elimination of gastrointestinal symptoms that can result from incomplete protein digestion, a problem that causes some consumers to shy away from highprotein products. Currently, Aminogen is found in select protein powders and tablets for athletes and dieters who want to build or maintain lean muscle mass.
