Study claim: Curcuminoids from Curcumin C3 Complex could boost the body's ability to clear the build-up of plaque in the brain that is linked to Alzheimer's disease.

Published: Zhang L, et al. Curcuminoids enhance amyloid- beta uptake by macrophages of Alzheimer's disease patients. J Alzheimers Dis 2006 Sep;10(1):1-7.

Abstract: Treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is difficult due to ignorance of its pathogenesis. AD patients have defects in phagocytosis of amyloid-beta (1-42) (Abeta) in vitro by the innate immune cells, monocyte/macrophages and in clearance of Abeta plaques. Macrophages travel through the brain and body, gobbling up waste products, including amyloid beta. The natural product curcuminoids enhanced brain clearance of Abeta in animal models. Macrophages of six AD patients and three controls were treated by curcuminoids in vitro and measured Abeta uptake using fluorescence and confocal microscopy. At baseline, the intensity of Abeta uptake by AD macrophages was significantly lower in comparison to control macrophages and involved surface binding but no intracellular uptake.

Using blood samples from six Alzheimer's-disease patients and three healthy control patients, the research team isolated macrophages, and treated them with a drug derived from curcumin for 24 hours in a cell culture, and then introduced amyloid beta. Treated macrophages from three out of six Alzheimer's disease patients showed improved uptake or ingestion of the waste product compared to the patients' macrophages not treated with curcumin. Macrophages from the healthy controls, which were already effectively clearing amyloid beta, showed no change when curcumin was added. Curcumin improved ingestion of amyloid beta by immune cells in 50 per cent of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

These initial findings demonstrate that curcumin may help boost the immune system of specific Alzheimer's-disease patients. The patients ranged in age from 65 to 84. Patients whose immune cells responded were younger and had higher scores on a Mini-Mental State Examination, suggesting that curcumin may help those with less-advanced dementia. The method researchers used to test the immune cell response of macrophages may provide a novel way of evaluating the effectiveness of drugs in clearing amyloid beta from the brain and may help to individualize Alzheimer's-disease treatment.

Potential applications: Curcumin C3 Complex is an extract of turmeric standardised to 95 per cent curcuminoids. Curcumin C3 Complex has been certified by NSF International to ensure that it is free of any impurities and contaminants that may be potentially harmful to consumers.

Study claim: CardioTrim CORE Formula showed significant reductions in weight and central obesity, as well as in fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein.

Published: Oben J, et al. The use of a Cissus quadrangularis formulation in the management of weight loss and metabolic syndrome. Lipids Health Dis 2006 Sep 2;5:24.

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the use of a Cissus quadrangularis formulation in the management of metabolic syndrome, particularly weight loss and central obesity. The study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled design involving 123 overweight and obese persons (47.2 per cent male; 52.8 per cent female; ages 19-50). The 92 obese (BMI >30) participants were randomised into three groups; placebo, formulation/no diet, and formulation/diet (2100-2200 calories/day). The 31 overweight participants (BMI = 25-29) formed a fourth (no diet) treatment group. All participants received two daily doses of the formulation or placebo and remained on a normal or calorie-controlled diet for eight weeks.

At the end of the trial period, statistically significant net reductions in weight and central obesity, as well as in fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and C-reactive protein, were observed in participants who received the formulation, regardless of diet.

Potential applications: In supplemental form, Cissus quadrangularis appears to be useful in the management of weight loss and metabolic syndrome. The CardioTrim CORE formula contains Cissus and AlbumaSoy, along with a blend of green tea extract, chromium polynicotinate, selenium, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid.
