Wellmune WGP Reduces Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Symptoms and Improves Mood States, Study Finds

The body of research demonstrating that Wellmune WGP® can reduce upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and improve the psychological well-being of individuals with stressful lifestyles continued to grow this week with the presentation of new data at Experimental Biology 2010.

In a study of 122 healthy volunteers (32 men, 90 women 38 + 12y), participants taking 250 mg of Wellmune WGP daily for 12 weeks reported a statistically significant (p<0.05) 58% reduction in upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, compared with individuals taking a placebo. Wellmune WGP is a natural carbohydrate that activates key immune cells and is a product of Biothera, a Minnesota biotechnology company focused on immune health.

Using a Profile of Mood States (POMS) psychological survey to assess changes in mental and physical energy levels and overall well-being, the study demonstrated statistically significant benefits for the Wellmune WGP group.

These participants rated their overall well-being and vigor 9.5% and 11% higher, respectively, compared with the placebo group. Data for both measures had p values of <0.05.

“As we have seen in previous peer-reviewed, published studies, Wellmune WGP can naturally enhance immune responses during periods of high stress,” said Don Cox, Ph.D., Biothera vice president of Research and Development. “Maintaining a healthy immune system is critical to maintaining overall health and vitality.”

GLH Nutrition, which conducted the study on behalf of Biothera, is an independent research & development organization that evaluates ingredients for food, beverage and dietary supplements.
