Astaxanthin exhibits blood lipid and weight maintenance benefits in pre-clinical trial in mice

Astaxanthin exhibited very promising benefits in a pre-clinical trial done on obese mice. When supplemented with astaxanthin, obese mice fed a high fat diet showed improvements in a variety of parameters including:

Total cholesterol
Plasma triglyceride
Liver triglyceride
Liver weight
Body weight gain

The researchers concluded, “These results suggest that astaxanthin might be of value in reducing the likelihood of obesity and metabolic syndrome in affluent societies” (Ikeuchi, et al, 2007). While the weight gain improvement has not been previously studied as a potential application, improvement in blood lipids has already been documented in earlier animal and human studies.
