Lexicon of Sustainability
Watchword: Sustainability

Watchword: Sustainability

In an effort to draw attention to the best and brightest ideas in sustainability, the Lexicon of Sustainability's Food List project defines the words that are integral to a healthy, transparent, accountable food system. Each week, we explore a new word through information artwork, films and written works. See the full list of Food List words here.

Sustainability: “Respect Mother Earth. Respect the land. Learn from the animals. When foraging always leave something behind for whoever comes next. In this way you’re sure to find something when you come back.” -Running Squirrel, a Cherokee forager

“When the Indians came upon a new land and didn’t know what to eat, they asked Mother Earth for guidance.”

Meet the people whose work embodies sustainability in this video:

Inspired? Here's a recipe to share that will help consumers put sustainability to work in the kitchen. This spring soup combines early-season produce with the last root vegetables left over from winter storage.

For the past three years, the Lexicon of Sustainability has sought out the foremost practitioners of sustainability in food and farming to gain their insights and experiences on this important subject. What began as a photography project to spread their knowledge has grown to include short films, study guides, traveling shows, a book, and a website where people can add their own terms to this ever-evolving lexicon.
