The statistics on heart disease in the United States are sobering. Heart disease in one of its various forms remains the leading cause of death for both men and women, accounting for 1 in 4 deaths every year. What’s more, the cost of these health issues in health care, medication and lost productivity are nearly $110 billion annually, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And it is far from just an American problem. Chronic health issues are reaching epidemic proportions, and heart health is expected to be the leading cause of death globally by 2020.
