Glanbia to build processing facility in South Dakota

Sioux Falls location will replace the company's plant in Angusville, Manitoba, which was destroyed by fire in March 2012.

Glanbia Nutritionals Ingredient Technologies, (GNIT), a global innovator in value-added protein and flaxseed ingredients, announced today it will build a 40,000 sq. ft. cereal ingredient processing facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The facility, located at 4401 West 62nd Street North, is expected to begin operations in July 2013. It will employ 38 people and produce industry-leading whole and milled flaxseed ingredients for the food, beverage, supplement and animal nutrition industries. The Sioux Falls location will replace the company's plant in Angusville, Manitoba, which was destroyed by fire in March 2012.

"After careful consideration of a range of locations in Canada and the U.S., it became apparent that locating our new state-of-the-art cereal ingredient facility in Sioux Falls was the best decision for our customers, suppliers and company," said Jerry O'Dea, President and CEO of Glanbia Nutritionals Ingredient Technologies. "The welcome and support of the City of Sioux Falls and the State of South Dakota were integral to our choice. We look forward to continue to grow with our new community."

Sioux Falls was selected due to its proximity to the Canadian Flax growing regions, favorable highway and rail systems with reasonable transportation costs, convenience to customers and suppliers as well as the strong support of state and local elected officials and economic development leaders.

"I am very pleased to welcome Glanbia Nutritionals to South Dakota as our newest corporate citizen," Gov. Dennis Daugaard said. "Glanbia Nutritionals is a leader in the agricultural industry throughout the world and will be an excellent addition to South Dakota's growing Value-Added Ag industry."

The Sioux Falls facility will produce industry-leading whole and milled flaxseed ingredients as well as other seed and grain products for the food, beverage, supplement and animal nutrition industries. Glanbia Nutritionals will continue to source flaxseed from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern U.S. states as before.

"Glanbia's choice of Sioux Falls as the site of their new facility shows their understanding of the business advantages of a Sioux Falls, South Dakota location," said Slater Barr, president of the Sioux Falls Development Foundation. "The Governor's Office of Economic Development, the City of Sioux Falls and our organization worked together to find the right place for Glanbia to grow and prosper with their South Dakota operation."

Glanbia Nutritionals entered the flax business when it purchased the former Pizzey's Milling in Angusville, Manitoba in September 2007. Since then, the company expanded flax operations to include the development of several high quality ingredients to deliver nutrition like ALA-Omega 3, protein, fiber and antioxidants in goods produced by food, beverage and supplement manufacturers.

GNIT develops, manufactures and sells nutritional and functional ingredients to food, beverage and supplement manufacturers. It is a leading global supplier of ingredients derived from dairy, flaxseed and other nutritious sources. Products include whey proteins, whey peptides, milk proteins, flaxseed ingredients, functional ingredients to improve finished products, dairy minerals and lactose. The company employs over 1,800 employees throughout the U.S., with R&D facilities in Idaho and four manufacturing plants in Idaho and New Mexico.
