Is chocolate the best way to get your probiotics?

A Croatian company believes chocolate is the answer for delivering more stable probiotics to a more receptive public. 

Probiotics are not only more attractive in chocolate, they work better too, according to a Croatian supplement manufacturer. reports on Croation supplement company Milsing, which is banking on its own brand of chocolate probiotics, Chocowise, as well as producing the product for private label clients. The products offer a more stable delivery mechanism for the microbes, as well as providing an alternative for the pill-fatigued.

Milsing officials point to research presented last year at a meeting of the American Chemical Society that reveals how microbes feast on dark chocolate, using it to grow and ferment anti-inflammatory compounds.

“The perception of chocolate has changed a lot in the last 10 years, especially dark chocolate,” Iva Martic, head of product development at Milsing, told “I think consumers recognize there are a lot of benefits, so it definitely makes sense to put some functional ingredients inside, especially probiotics because they are extremely stable in chocolate. Also there is a synergy between cocoa fibers and probiotics – they actually feed on it, so the stability is much better than when you use capsules or tablets.”

The company distributes Chocowise only in pharmacies in Eastern Europe, describing it as a food supplement, not a functional food.
