Bionov, unique industrial producer of natural and protected superoxide dismutase (SOD) from melon, has elucidated a completely new mechanism of action of an SOD oral supplementation. The oral administration of SOD B®, a SOD-rich melon concentrate, has been shown to induce the expression of endogenous enzymatic antioxidant defenses, allowing it to inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation. Such a mechanism could be linked to numerous health benefits.
New mechanism of action by oral route
Even if SOD is a protein that can’t be absorbed following an oral administration, a lot of beneficial effects, including the reduction of cellulite and the inhibition of stress and fatigue, have already been reported in humans following an oral supplementation. The last 10 years, Bionov has focused its research and development strategy on the elucidation of the mechanism of action of an oral administration with SOD B, a melon concentrate rich in SOD.
“Research has showed that an SOD B oral supplementation is linked with the induction of endogenous antioxidant enzymes expression—SODs, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)—in different animal models,” said J. Carillon, preclinical research manager at Bionov. Four major scientific publications, including an expert review, were published in 2013 to expose and detail this specific new mechanism of action. For the first time, it has been demonstrated that a protein should not necessarily be absorbed to provide health effects.
Since its discovery 40 years ago, more than 50,000 scientific publications have been done on SOD, providing accumulated evidences of its efficiency in a lot of human disorders. In 2013, Bionov R&D department linked the induction of antioxidant enzymes expression to the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation. Such an induction “could play a preventive role by protecting against any physiological alteration,” said B. Lemaire, business marketing director at Bionov. Thanks to this specific mechanism of action, “it is now possible to explain the benefits of an SOD B supplementation in numerous applications, including the support of vitality, cognitive health, eye health, joint health, skin health and more,” he adds.
Reminder on antioxidant enzymes
SOD, CAT and GPx are fundamental antioxidant enzymes, widespread in all aerobic organisms. They serve a key antioxidant function by fighting harmful free radicals. SOD provides an initial protection by dismuting superoxide anion into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Then, CAT and GPx remove the H2O2 produced into water. Thanks to their synergic activity at the first line of antioxidant defenses, SOD, CAT and GPx prevent oxidative damages to DNA, proteins and lipids.
