Skating her final race, Canadian speed skater Clara Hughes, who is sponsored by COLD-FX, took a bronze medal Wednesday in the women's 5000m race in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Hughes, skating in an earlier pair, posted a time that stood until the last two pairs of the event. She ended up finishing 4.82 seconds off the time of winner Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic. It was the sixth Olympic medal of Hughes' illustrious career.
"It's such an amazing feeling," Hughes told Canadian television. "I want to say thank you to this amazing crowd once again. You gave me wings."
Hughes is one of the few athletes to compete, much less medal, in both the summer and winter Games. Hughes has won gold, silver and bronze medals in speed skating at previous winter Games and won two bronze medals in cycling at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. After juggling the two sports at an elite level for years, she finally parked the bike in favor of her skates in 2003.
