Avesthagen Launches HibiX(TM)

Hibiscus extract promotes cardioprotective and antioxidant benefits, plus contains significant HCA content.

CHATSWORTH, CA – New from Avesthagen is HibiX™, a proprietary hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) extract that has scientific support for cardioprotection and healthy weight management.

Hibiscus sabdariffa, known commonly as Roselle flower, has a wide history of use throughout the world for varied conditions including colds and respiratory conditions, as well as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. In addition, research has revealed that it naturally contains (+)- HCA (hydroxycitric acid), a bioactive noted for its appetite suppression capabilities. In many countries, hibiscus is an ingredient in a variety of foods including teas, juices, sauces, jams, relish, and salad dressings. Not just another pretty flower, hibiscus is also known for its mild pleasant flavor and its brilliant red color. HibiX is extracted from the red flower calces (the outer covering of the flower buds) and is naturally rich in anthocyanins which allows for a range of natural colorant applications in food and beverages. HibiX is standardized to 45% (+)-HCA by HPLC and is 100% water soluble.

Recent research has shown Hibiscus effective against anti-microbial, acne-inducing bacteria. Hibiscus has been shown to offer antioxidant support to the skin, and may show significant action against skin UV damage and antioxidant protection. “There is a lot of potential for HibiX™ in cosmeceutical and nutri-cosmetic applications,” says Lauren Clardy, Director of Marketing of Avesthagen Inc. “More consumers have become aware of the link between wellness and beauty. The interest in nutrition supporting both internal health and outward beauty is helping to fuel consumer awareness.”

Hibiscus is rich in anthocyanins, such as cyaniding and delphinidin, which have been shown in animal and in vitro studies to exert an anti-hypertensive effect, as well as a cholesterol-reducing effect. Further in vitro and in vivo studies showed an expression of anti-atherosclerotic activity when hibiscus extract was administered. Hibiscus extract is also abundant in antioxidants, with in vitro experiments showing potent and rapid scavenging of hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide, greater than a comparison with vitamin E and quercetin.

“Hibiscus has tremendous potential in the growing the heart health category of dietary supplements and functional foods,” says Alex Moffett, CEO of Avesthagen Inc. “It also has a very high naturally occurring content of (+)-HCA, which helps promote healthy weight loss by suppressing appetite. For the millions of Americans who are overweight and who are concerned about their cardiovascular health, HibiX™ can pack a natural and effective one-two- punch.”
