In September 2008, Paul Levinsohn and a group of other private-equity investors came together to purchase the assets of the nutritional supplement company that sold the cognitive-health brand Focus Factor. A lawyer by training, Levinsohn may be new to the dietary supplement industry, but he understands two important drivers of supplement sales: mass market retail distribution and growing consumer interest in natural products targeted to cognitive health. Levinsohn, who is CEO of the new company behind the Focus Factor brand, Factor Nutrition Labs, spoke with Nutrition Business Journal Editor Carlotta Mast during the 2009 NBJ Summit about why he entered the dietary supplement market, what he’s learned so far and how Focus Factor sales are faring in the current economy.
