A new plant extract has been introduced by Diana Naturals, Antrain, France, under the Phytonutriance® brand name. Based on fucus vesiculosus, a brown algae rich in phytotannins, the Phytonutriance® HealSea™ extract has been clinically proven to significantly increase the production of aortic nitric oxide and to reduce the susceptibility of VLDL and LDL cholesterol- rich lipoproteins to oxidation ex vivo. A patent has been filed in France.
The company, in conjunction with partners Ceva (Centre d’Etude et de Valorisation desAlgues en Bretagne), the Department
of Physiology at the University of Barcelona and the Department of Food and Microbiological Sciences and Technologies at the University of Milan, has conducted in vivo animal and human clinicals to demonstrate that the phlorotannins found in Phytonutriance® HealSea™ contribute to the prevention of atherosclerosis.
The first animal trial studied the effect of Phytonutriance® HealSea™ in preventing the susceptibility of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) to oxidation. Rats that were fed Phytonutriance® HealSea™had more resistance to the onset of lipid peroxidation and to the propagation rate.A second animal study tested the accumulation of plaque on the aortic luminal area in mice; supplementation with Phytonutriance® HealSea™ reduced plaque formation almost 20 times.
A double blind human clinical was also performed. Healthy human volunteers took either 500 mg of Phytonutriance® HealSea™ or a placebo for six weeks (with a six-week washout period) and vitamin C plasma levels were tested. Levels of plasma vitamin C were significantly higher after 21 and 42 days of supplementation with Phytonutriance® HealSea™ compared to a placebo algae powder.
Phytonutriance® HealSea™is standardized to 11% polyphenol phloroglucinol equivalent. The product can be used in tablets or capsules.
