What was the most compelling industry news story of the past year?

No. 1 – Food safety

 “Food safety is always a hot topic because people need to be assured that their food is safe and there are a number of products or ingredients that are unsafe for consumption due to negligence or carelessness every year. This costs the industry millions, if not billions, of dollars annually and could be avoided.”

 “Food safety involves all people (since we all eat), and our customers, friends and neighbors are always talking about how they are concerned about food products. Many are now starting to can, freeze, purchase local, etc.”

Runner-up – The economy

 “Clearly, the economy's impact is touching all walks of life both in a commercial and personal life sense. Trying to succeed in this environment is a daunting challenge.”

 “It helped me to remember to keep focused on what we do best and to make sure our customer service is far beyond our competitors.”

Honorable mention – President Barack Obama’s administration

 “These are the people who will be shaping food policy for at least the next four years. I have a vested interest in the reversal of several "anti" natural, "anti" family farm and "anti" organic policies and look for supportive cabinet appointments to triage the current system and hopefully steer us on to a new course of sustainability.”
