FDA publishes medical foods FAQ

Dietary supplement and food manufacturers sometimes consider whether their products may be marketed as medical foods. Medical foods differ from conventional foods in that they are permitted to make disease treatment claims in connection with their intended use. These products are also dispensed on the order of physicians, although they may not be labeled Rx Only. Those considering marketing products as medical foods should review these FAQs. Comments on these FAQs may be filed with FDA through Oct. 14.
