Heartening Response To Tragic Events

The tragic events that we faced as a nation last month most definitely altered the course of history. Our hearts and prayers are with everyone touched by these horrific events. The impacts were felt far and wide, touching everyone in the nation and many globally in profound and deeply emotional ways.

One of the impacts that we felt in Boulder at New Hope Natural Media that lifted our hearts only hours after the initial attack was calls that came from you—the people who comprise the natural products industry. The phones began to ring with questions about Natural Products Expo East to be held Oct. 11 to 14 in Washington, D.C. Many of you called concerned that we would not be producing the show—expressing a desire to connect with industry peers and friends in the community setting that the show provides. Only a few of the initial calls were requesting cancellation details, which clearly demonstrates the spirit that we possess collectively as an industry.

This industry was founded on friendships, it has grown through relationships that transcend business and have become deeply personal, and this industry will thrive in the future because we are a community. The premise that bonds us so tightly together is a mission to impact people's lives in a positive way by helping them help themselves toward optimum health. The value system that attracts people to work in this industry has provided us with an inherent natural selection process. The result is a group of talented, compassionate and dedicated individuals who come together in a unique and wonderful business environment. The response to this recent course of events has galvanized us in our mission and reinforced our sense of community.

Please join us at the entrance to the National Museum of Women in the Arts at 1250 New York Ave., N.W., adjacent to the Washington, D.C., Convention Center at 6:45 p.m., prior to the Spirit of Organic Awards Dinner, on Thursday evening, Oct.11, for a brief candlelight processional to acknowledge and honor the victims of these atrocities. Thank you for your sentiments about our shows providing a face-to-face forum, a place to huddle and "circle the wagons" in order to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and community.
