The panel will address salient topics such as the pros and cons of research standards—are placebo controlled studies the answer? What other options does the industry have?

The State of the Science Track
Meeting the challenges of changing competitive and regulatory landscapes has become crititcal for companies in the supplements and funcational foods industry. Nutracon's state of the science track, produced in partnership with UNPA, will delve into discussions about the current challenges and will help companies answer the questions that are facing them today and develop products that are safe, efficacious and meet real consumer needs.

Joseph Betz PhD
Joseph M. Betz, PhD, joined the ODS as director of the newly formed Dietary Supplements Methods and Reference Materials Program in December of 2001. In this role, he oversees efforts to enhance and stimulate research and training in fields relevant to dietary supplements at the NIH and to promote development of validated analytical methods and reference materials for use by industry, regulatory agencies, and clinical researchers. Prior to this, he was Vice President for Scientific and Technical Affairs at the American Herbal Products Association. Before joining the AHPA, he spent 12 years as a research chemist at FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Dr. Betz earned his PhD in Pharmacognosy (1988) under the tutelage of Dr. Ara Der Marderosian at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia). His research interests lie in the areas of toxic natural products, plant derived foods which may prevent chronic disease, and in analytical methods for determination of botanical quality. In March 2006, he was the first recipient of the American Botanical Council's Norman R. Farnsworth Botanical Research Award, and continues to work toward ensuring the quality and safety of botanical products.

Loren Israelsen

Loren Israelsen is president of LDI Group Inc., a consulting firm specializing in dietary supplements, functional and organic foods and international regulatory issues. He has served as vice president/general counsel to the American Herbal Products Association, co-founder and counsel to the European American Phytomedicine Coalition (EAPC), industry liaison to FDA’s Expert Advisory Committee on Ephedra, issue manager for dietary supplements for the Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD), founding member and executive board member of the International Alliance of Dietary Supplement Associations (IADSA) and an industry advisor to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS).

Luke R. Bucci, Ph.D., CCN, C(ASCP), CNS
Vice President of Research

As Vice President of Research for Schiff, Luke R. Bucci, Ph.D. is instrumental in Schiff's product development systems, guidelines and testing procedures and evaluations. Dr. Bucci heads a staff of degreed professionals, both internal and outside expert consultants.

Prior to joining Schiff in 1995, Dr. Bucci served as Director of Science and Quality at SpectraCell Laboratories Inc., in Houston, where he specialized in functional nutrient assessments. While working there, Dr. Bucci developed Spectrox, the first patented, commercially available test for total antioxidant function. Preceding SpectraCell Laboratories, Dr. Bucci formed InnerPath Nutrition, a clinical nutrition, nutritional consulting and educational company, which he still owns and directs.

Dr. Bucci holds several patents and patent applications on clinical laboratory testing methods and procedures for dietary supplements.
