Orafti®Synergy1 Helps Make Friendship All Natural Digestive Health Cottage Cheese State-of-the-Art for Functionality and Health

BENEO-Orafti is proud to announce its association with Friendship Dairies in their introduction of America's first all natural cottage cheese product containing both live, active probiotic cultures and prebiotic fiber to naturally boost both digestive and bone health.

Friendship All Natural Digestive Health Cottage Cheese delivers digestive and bone health benefits by offering added dietary fiber in the form of BENEO-Orafti's Orafti®Synergy1 oligofructose-enriched inulin at three grams per serving, which is important for overall balanced nutrition. This enriched prebiotic fiber derived from chicory roots helps stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria1 in the digestive tract. In fact,
Orafti®Synergy1 has been clinically shown to provide an extra boost to calcium absorption and bone health as compared to regular inulin. 2

Friendship All Natural Digestive Health Cottage Cheese is low-fat (2% milkfat) and each serving offers pro-active nutrients that deliver healthy benefits. In addition to promoting digestive health with live, active probiotic (Bifidobacteria) cultures, 3 one-half cup of Friendship All Natural Digestive Health Cottage Cheese also delivers a good source of calcium and prebiotic fiber (10% DV) to support healthy bones. It is also rich in protein (28% DV) to help build and maintain muscle tissue.

"We're seeing increased consumer demand for products that provide more natural attributes as well as products that contain functional nutrients that deliver healthy benefits. We are pleased to now offer an all natural cottage cheese product with digestive and bone enhancing nutrients, while maintaining our product standards in quality, taste and freshness that our consumers have come to expect," says Paige Pistone, Director of Marketing, Friendship Dairies. "We look forward to a continued commitment in bringing innovation to our all natural line of cultured dairy products."

More than 150 probiotic/prebiotic products were introduced in the US in 2007 compared to 100 in 2006 and 40 in 2005, according to Tom Vierhille from Datamonitor. The 2007 Datamonitor Functional Food & Drink Consumer Trends Report states that by 2011, Dairy is projected to lead the functional food and drink category in the US surpassing soft drinks with $7.85 billion in sales. US sales of products that aid in digestive health exceeded $600 million in 2006 with the highest compound annual growth rate among functional foods by claimed health benefit. This growth is projected to continue through 2011 by a rate of 10.2 percent annually.

1 Human clinical research studies published in Nutrition Research in 2001 and 2007 demonstrated that intake of prebiotic fiber as low as 5g per day helps support digestive health by stimulating Bifidobacteria (good bacteria).

2 Other studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2005) and British Journal of Nutrition (2002) shows that oligofructose-enriched inulin (fiber) intake as low as 8g per day helps support calcium absorption.

3 Multiple research studies published in the Journal of Nutritional Food in 2000 examined different age groups of volunteers who were given milk containing 1-3 Billion BB12 Bifidobacteria. The results demonstrated an improvement in digestive health, an increase in the ratio of Bifidobacteria (good bacteria) to total bacteria was experienced, and the frequency of Clostridium perfringens (bad bacteria) was decreased.
