Private label supplement manufacturer Vitamer Labs of Irvine, Calif., hired Nicole Ely as technical marketing associate. Ely has more than nine years of experience in the dietary supplement industry in Southern California.

The American Association for Cancer Research-Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation gave internationally recognized expert on tobacco and cancer Stephen Hecht its fifth annual Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention Research. Hecht is the Wallin Professor of Cancer Prevention and the American Cancer Society Research Professor at the University of Minnesota, and was honored for more than three decades of research.

The supervisory board of German global specialty chemicals supplier Cognis appointed three new people to its management board: Paul Allen, executive vice president of functional foods; Stephane Baseden, executive vice president of nutrition and health; and Richard Ridinger, executive vice president of care chemicals.

Morrisville, Vt.-based candle company Way Out Wax named Laura Rosenthal production manager and Anna Barrett director of marketing and public relations.

Oakland, Calif.-based Organic Exchange, a nonprofit organization committed to expanding production and use of organic fibers, made several recent staff changes. Jill Dumain, director of environmental analysis for Patagonia, was elected chairwoman of the board of directors. Texas organic cotton farmer and former chief executive officer of Organic Essentials La Rhea Pepper is the new executive director. Rebecca Calahan Klein, OE's founding president, will become director of program development. Heidi McCloskey, former OE communications director and global sustainability director for Nike, will become director of marketing and communications.

Albert's Organics, a subsidiary of United Natural Foods Inc., hired Edward O'Malley as vice president of supply-chain management of produce. O'Malley has more than 25 years of experience in the global produce industry with companies such as Dole Foods, Coastal Berry, Fresh Express and Paramount Farms. Most recently, he was a consultant with Albert's Source Organic division.

Los Angeles-based nutrition company Jarrow Formulas hired Alan Kristowski as a sales representative for the company's west Florida territory. Kristwoski was formerly the director of sales, marketing and new product development for Alternecare Health Products in Tampa, Fla.

Ocean Nutrition Canada, based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, appointed Kevin Krail as general manager of its new Asia-Pacific region, which includes Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He will keep a regional office in Sydney, Australia. Ocean Nutrition is a supplier of omega-3 EPA/DHA supplement and food ingredients.

Amha Belay, Ph.D., senior vice president and scientific director for Irvine, Calif.-based spirulina supplier Earthrise Nutritionals, presented a lead paper on production, quality assurance and application of spirulina at the 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Algal Biotechnology in Manila, Philippines in the fall of 2006. Belay shared more than 30 years' experience on the use of algae as a food source with more than 150 scientists who participated in the conference.

Rob Hurlbut, former chief operating officer of Niman Ranch, will be leading Attune Foods, a new company dedicated to developing daily wellness products, launched by Brand New Brands. The spin-off was financed by Unilever Ventures, Prolog Ventures, Great Spirit Ventures and Burrill & Co., and will debut wellness bars featuring probiotics.

David Burke, former chief marketing officer and vice president for consumer and category development for the Pepsi Group in Somers, N.Y., and former president of sales and marketing for the Eastern Seaboard region of Coca-Cola Enterprises, joined Primo Water Corp. of Winston-Salem, N.C., as vice president of business development.

Carlsbad, Calif.-based SGN Nutrition, a food-based supplement supplier and parent company to Emerald Balance and X-Balance brands, named Chris Peruzzi vice president of sales. Peruzzi previously worked for Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Vitamin Cottage and Symbiotics, a division of supplements manufacturer Symco.

Houston-based Himalaya Herbal Healthcare USA hired Mike Vincent to oversee sales activities for the company's U.S. market. Vincent, who has nearly 10 years of sales and brand-management experience in the health and nutrition industry, was formerly a territory manager for Met-RX/Worldwide.

The American Egg Board, based in Park Ridge, Ill., confirmed the executive committee's selection of Joanne Ivy as its senior vice president, succeeding Louis Raffel as president and chief operating officer upon his retirement at the end of 2006. Ivy has served on the AEB staff for 20 years and was previously executive director of the North Carolina Egg Association.

Los Angeles-based nutrition company Herbalife appointed Young Hee Chung as general manager of operations in Korea. She is the first female to serve in this capacity in Korea, and was hired when Herbalife began in Korea in 1996. Chung has served as senior manager of distributor relations and sales, and senior manager for sales and marketing.
