Powerful Organic Ingredients Are Adding Even More Fuel To The Skyrocketing Smoothie Trend

Drink Companies & Consumers are Finding that Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Protein Powder is an Easy Way to Add Protein and Fiber to Convenient “Grab-and-Go” Smoothies

Winnipeg, Manitoba (May 17, 2006) – With sales of more than $1 billion and projected growth of 30% for this year, smoothie drinks are one of the hottest food and beverage trends in North America. These portable “liquid meals” are considered the healthy fast food of the 21st century. While there are smoothie franchises cropping up in towns across the continent, many smoothie enthusiasts are finding that they enjoy the culinary pursuits and economic benefits of blending their own or prefer the convenience of buying a pre-made bottled version where they do their shopping.

Organic Hemp Protein Powder is one of the hot new ingredients emerging quickly onto the smoothie scene. Sales are soaring now that smoothie companies and consumers are discovering hemp’s pleasant nutty flavor, powerful protein profile and healthy dietary fiber. Manitoba Harvest, the leading hemp foods brand, has announced a new Organic Hemp Protein Powder that is geared specifically for the smoothie category. It is offered in a 16-ounce container for $14.99 and is available at thousands of retail outlets in North America. Delicious smoothie recipes that feature organic hemp protein powder are listed below, and more are available at www.manitobaharvest.com/recipes.

While many smoothie enthusiasts enjoy experimenting with new recipes in their home or at the office, others are excited about the new prepared versions that are available at thousands of mainstream grocery stores and health food locations. Sambazon (www.sambazon.com), the leading marketer of the Amazon fruit called Acai recently announced the launch of six new bottled Antioxidant Superfood Smoothies that are distributed nationally in the United States and Canada. Acai is a wild-harvested Amazon palmberry rich in antioxidants that is another popular new smoothie ingredient. Two of Sambazon's new grab-and-go fresh bottled organic products contain Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Protein Powder: Vanilla Protein Warrior and Chocolate Protein Warrior. [

“We use Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Protein Powder because it offers a powerful combination of protein and essential omegas that are a perfect complement to our antioxidant-rich Acai,” says Jeremy Black, Sambazon Global Brand Manager. “I’ve been blending Manitoba Harvest protein powder into my smoothies at home for a long time and I knew that it would be well received by our customers,” he adds.

“Nutrition savvy people are discovering that hemp is a powerhouse food ,” explains celebrity lifestyle coach Cameron Shayne, creator of the Budokon method whom advises stars in Los Angeles including Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Meg Ryan and Renee Russo. “Not only is it one of the richest sources of protein in the plant kingdom, it is a vegetarian protein source that also features plenty of fiber, vitamins and omega-3 and -6 essential fatty acids,” notes Shayne. Hemp is a well-balanced protein source that includes all of the essential amino acids. Of its impressive protein total, hemp protein powder contains an amazing 66% of “edestin,” proteins which are pre-cursors to such vital body components as hormones, hemoglobin, enzymes and antibodies. Hemp’s edestin structure is the highest in the plant kingdom.

Unlike the multitude of refined “isolate” protein powders on the market today, Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Protein Powder is a “whole food” powder made from 100% live and viable hemp seeds grown organically. There are no additives or chemicals used in its production. Manitoba Harvest’s cold press process ensures that valuable enzymes are not destroyed and the many vitamins, minerals and nutrients remain intact. This is in sharp contrast to many soy protein isolates that are often processed with chemicals such as hexane, and typically require high heating or fermentation to destroy various anti-nutritional qualities such as phytic acids that can prevent proper assimilation of essential minerals.

Since Manitoba Harvest is an integrated producer of hemp food products, the largest in North America, they control production from “seed to shelf,” and are therefore able to ensure freshness and quality. Founded in 1998, Manitoba Harvest is an award-winning company that contracts hemp seed production on 5,000 acres by more than 25 farmers who are shareholders in the company. The raw, non-GMO seed is processed into hemp protein powder, hemp seed oil, hemp seed nut, and hemp seed nut butter at the company’s 6,000 square foot USDA organic certified processing plant. Manitoba Harvest products are offered nationwide by more than 2,500 natural food retailers, including Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats.
