This week Yakult U.S.A. Inc., begins to sell its signature probiotic dairy beverage, Yakult, in more than 200 Safeway grocery stores in Northern California. This agreement also includes over 100 Safeway stores in Arizona and Hawaii, the latter of which is new territory for Yakult. The petite probiotic beverage containing around 8 billion live and active probiotics per 2.7 fluid ounce bottle is available as a 5-pack and being introduced at $2.99.
According to recent Nielsen data, Yakult is the leading probiotic dairy drink, garnering over 10% of the dollar share in this category in Southern California. Internationally, Yakult is one of the top probiotics companies, selling in excess of 25 million bottles daily. It is credited for being the world's first consumer-packaged probiotic drink and the inspiration for today's functional food and beverage categories.
"Initially retailers were hesitant to bring on Yakult because it was an unknown brand name in the U.S.," says Marjorie Yamat, National Key Account Manager for Yakult U.S.A. Inc. "Now our retailers tell us they can't keep up with the consumer demand of our product."
Since Yakult's U.S. debut in September 2007, it has won over around 100,000 loyal daily customers in California, Nevada, Arizona and select niche markets across the country.
Yakult is available in more than 30 countries and regions around the world. Yakult U.S.A. Inc., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd., is headquartered in Torrance, CA. It supports Yakult's business in the United States and Canada. Yakult was originally produced by microbiologist Dr. Minoru Shirota in 1935 in Japan. Scientists all over the world continue to confirm and expand knowledge regarding the benefits of probiotics and Yakult. Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. was established in Japan in 1955 and is regarded as the world's pioneer of probiotics. For more information, please visit www.yakultusa.com.
