Increase foot traffic and dollars spent in store

Retailer Roundtable: What's attracting new customers to your store?

Natural retailers reveal creative strategies for increasing foot traffic and dollars spent in store.

Nichole Ingmire, Manager at Pure-N-Simple Natural Foods in Delaware, Ohio

Nichole IngmirePeople want something other than prescription drugs to maintain their health, so helping them find and adopt preventive lifestyles rather than treating conditions is how our store brings in new customers. We don’t do much traditional advertising, so establishing ourselves as a place to go for preventive medicine is key for success.

Larry Satterfield, Owner of Natural Foods Market in Midland, Texas

Larry SatterfieldThe number-one thing I did to attract new customers was to act on an article I read in Time magazine awhile back that listed some of Americans’ most common health complaints. Now when I advertise, I list these complaints and the solutions we offer. We’re getting more creative to bring in new crossover consumers.

Thad Buckey, Owner of Green Earth Grocery in Edwardsville, Ill.

Thad Buckey Coupon offers are really driving customers to our store right now. I usually put a $5- or $10-off total purchase coupon in our monthly mailer. No other advertising or coupon initiatives have worked as well as sending coupons directly to people’s homes. We probably get at least 100 returned each month.

Paige Young, Manager at Vitality Food Shop in Baton Rouge, La.

Paige YoungBesides Dr. Mehmet Oz’s suggestions, our Savings Program brings in many shoppers. I send emails a few times a month that include store specials and information. Shoppers save money on items by telling us where they learned about a special. Often, customers share these emails with their friends and family, which brings new customers to the store.
