The Analyst’s Take: Collagen boosts beauty-from-within category

Annual sales of collagen supplements reached $98 million in 2017, with continued double-digit growth of 30 percent.

Touted benefits of collagen use range from improving joint health to helping a leaky gut, but its effect on hair, skin and nails is arguably the most prominent benefit. Collagen now makes up 9 percent of the beauty-from-within supplements market, which is notable as it has grown from less than 1 percent of the market only five years ago. Growth in the collagen category is expected to increase again next year as new products enter the market and companies innovate in formulas and delivery format.

Collagen is also gaining traction as a functional ingredient in food and beverage, from infused water to nutrition bars.
