In the competitive grocery market, retailers can use all the help they can get, from trends to technology, from management practices to public relations. The Washington, D.C.-based Food Marketing Institute is committed to maintaining and improving a grocery distribution system responsive to retailer needs and consumer demands.
Natural and organic product retailers are among FMI's fastest growing membership segments. FMI offers information, expertise and business-building tools covering all aspects of food retailing, including:
Technology. From the warehouse to the checkout line, FMI explores how computers and the Internet can make work easier and fasterand how technology is opening new markets for retailers.
Government Relations. FMI spearheads industry campaigns to shape laws and regulations governing food safety, taxes, labeling, food stamps, electronic payments, farm price supports, free trade and the environment. FMI also serves the industry by making sure members of Congress understand industry positions.
Communications. In a crisis, FMI helps members respond to a controversy and handle challenging media calls. The association also educates the national and trade news media about issues and trends.
Loss Prevention. FMI has proven strategies to combat shoplifting and product tampering, and to reduce employee injuries and property damage.
Food Safety and Security. FMI offers training programs on how to store, prepare and display foods safely. Through FMI, members can educate their customers about food safety using Fight BAC! campaign materials. The FMI Web site has information on food security, including how to handle tampering cases, food recalls and possible biological threats.
Research and Education. FMI research shows what customers like and don't likeand how to meet their demandsincluding their interest in natural and organic products. FMI hosts more than 30 educational conferences a year, including the FMI Show each May in Chicago. FMI members can also participate in online chat groups covering various topics ranging from electronic payment systems to whole health solutions.
Electronic Share Groups. Members are invited to join FMI's e-share groups, which enable the organization to network with other members. The groups discuss communications, consumer affairs, electronic benefits transfer, electronic payment systems, energy, food safety, human resources, independent operators, loss prevention (OSHA, safety and security), pharmacy, technology and whole health solutions.
