General Mills pays steep price to get into high-growth business

As part of its efforts to diversify its portfolio, General Mills will buy Blue Buffalo, maker of high-end pet food, for $8 billion. Blue Buffalo makes a variety of natural foods and treats for pets under the Blue brand, which brings in more than $1.2 billion in sales a year. These companies are changing how Asia thinks about food

San Francisco-based food tech company Just (formerly Hampton Creek) isn’t just focused on disrupting the U.S. food market. In fact, CEO Josh Tetrick sees Asia as a hugely important component of fixing the food system, with its population of more than 4.5 billion. Interestingly, China also produced almost one-third of the eggs laid last year. So it makes sense that Just would bring its mung bean-based eggless scramble to Green Common, a plant-based grocery store chain in Hong Kong. Green Common’s founder, David Yeung, is also selling the American-made Beyond Burger in his store and hopes that Hong Kon can be a gateway for plant-based brands to move into the rest of Asia. Read more at CNBC…
