Why the 'gluten-free movement' is less of a fad than we thought

The number of people who are avoiding gluten even without a celiac disease diagnosis tripled between 2009 and 2014, according to a recent study led by researchers at Mayo Clinic. And although gluten avoidance is often stigmatized as trendy or ignorant of the science behind a disease, there's growing evidence that severe gluten sensitivity that causes intestinal problems, fatigue, stomachaches and mental fogginess really does exist. Researchers don’t understand the underlying mechanism just yet, but clinical studies have shown symptoms in many patients are relieved by following a gluten-free diet. Read more at The Washington Post...

 

Coconut no longer 'raw' after $1 million class action settlement

Harmless Harvest has agreed to stop marketing its coconut water as "raw" and "100 percent organic" as part of a proposed settlement to a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of misleading consumers with claims. The lawsuit argued that the company has knowingly purchased coconuts from vendors who are not certified organic, or from vendors whose source is unknown. Read more at Forbes...

 

Arctic Apples will test appetite for genetically modified produce

A small test market for Okanagan Specialty Fruits' Arctic Granny and Arctic Golden non-browning apples is set to begin soon.
