DSM OPENS IN CHINA
DSM has opened its first research and development centre in China, located in Shanghai.The DSM R&D Center China will be the company?s main R&D base in the country and will form a vital part of DSM?s global R&D network. DSM Nutritional Products, DSM Food Specialties and DSM NeoResins will be the first three DSM businesses to operate facilities at this R&D centre.
STEAZ WINS INNOVATION AWARD
Steaz Organic Green Tea Soda, the first USDA-certified organic soda on the market, won Most Innovative Product for its newly released organic soda fountain ginger ale at Natural Products Expo East. Steaz contains the same fizz and sparkle of standard sodas, but uses all organic ingredients and a cup of antioxidant-rich Ceylon green tea in every bottle.
NEW CEO AT VITIVA
Slovenia-based Vitiva,a natural rosemary antioxidant producer, named Ohad Cohen as its new CEO. Cohen was previously vice president of global sales and marketing at Frutarom. Vitiva owns 70 per cent of today?s market share of active ingredients of rosemary extracts in Europe. The company?s product line includes a full range of natural oil- and water-soluble rosemary antioxidants, from low to high concentrations, in both powder and liquid forms.
FKI NAMES DIVISION CHIEF
FKI Logistex has named Ted Clucas as president of FKI Logistex Manufacturing Systems North America, succeeding Dave Baker, who will assume the role of CFO for the division. Clucas has been with FKI Logistex for 17 years, most recently as vice president of systems engineering and operations. Prior positions with the company include director of systems operations, project manager and engineering supervisor. Clucas holds a bachelor?s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla.

CÉVAN WINS EXPORT AWARD
Cévan International of Colorado has been awarded a 2005 ThinkGlobal/Commercial News USA Exporter of the Year award from ThinkGlobal Inc, publisher of Commercial News USA. Commercial News is the export promotion magazine of the Department of Commerce, distributed in 145 countries. Awards are given in 14 industry categories; Cévan won in the health & beauty category. Cévan sells vitamins, minerals, skincare and botanical extracts. It reported a 15 per cent increase from 2003, with exports now representing more than 90 per cent of total sales.
JUMP IN TONALIN SALES
Cognis Health & Nutrition reports that sales of products containing its Tonalin CLA are three times higher than the CLA category average, according to data from Information Resources Inc. Tonalin product sales are up 29.2 per cent over last year in the food, drug and mass (excluding Wal-Mart) channels, while all other CLA brands combined decreased 8 per cent. The CLA category as a whole climbed 10 per cent. The company?s recent ?No Regain? campaign, promoting the findings of a new Tonalin study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, has been successful, Cognis reports. Articles related to this study generated nearly 75 million impressions in mainstream publications.
GRANT TO STUDY NOVEL WHEAT
Arcadia Biosciences, an agricultural biotechnology company, has received a Small Business Technology Transfer Program grant from the National Institutes of Health in partnership with Washington State University to research novel lines of wheat with reduced celiac disease-causing proteins. The grant will be split equally between Arcadia and its academic collaborator at WSU, Dr Diter von Wettstein, the R.A. Nilan Distinguished Professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Science.
PURIFIED GINSENG EXTRACT
Blue California has been appointed the exclusive distributor of a highly purified ginseng extract called GinsenPure Quintozene-Free. Some cultivators have not changed their growing techniques to accommodate the Food and Drug Administration?s zero tolerance of quintozene, sometimes used by farmers to prevent rotting, the company says, so it decided to find a highly purified ginseng extract guaranteed to be quintozene-free.

PROMOTIONS AT COGNIS
Paul Allen, a member of Cognis? Executive Committee and previously head of Cognis? Nutrition & Health strategic business unit, has taken over as group vice president of functional products. He replaced Guido Williams, who left the company in late 2005. Allen will remain president of Cognis Corp USA, based in Ohio. His successor as head of Nutrition & Health will be Stephane Baseden, who was vice president of the Health & Nutrition business unit in Europe. Baseden will continue in his role as legal representative of Cognis France and will be based near Paris.
BENEFITS OF BARLEY BETA-GLUCAN
Cargill has released initial results of the first double-blind study to determine the effects of extracted barley beta-glucan on cardiovascular disease biomarkers. The study abstract, to be published in an upcoming issue of Circulation, shows that Cargill?s Barlív barley beta-glucan concentrate improves CVD risk factors and other biomarkers in a population of generally healthy hypercholesterolemic men and women. Barlív is a concentrated soluble fiber derived from barley, and the data shows it has cholesterol-lowering properties similar to oats. In addition, one study suggests benefits beyond cholesterol reduction, including improved glycaemic control, particularly among individuals with metabolic syndrome.
In light of the recent Nobel Prize award to two Australian scientists who discovered a bacterium that causes stomach inflammation, ulcers and cancer, Decas Botanical Synergies is reintroducing its NutriCranGI, a synergistic fruit powder blend for supporting gastrointestinal health, which has been shown to inhibit Helicobacter pylori bacteria. A published laboratory study determined that NutriCranGI is significantly more potent in inhibiting H. pylori bacteria in vitro when compared to single antimicrobial compounds. These data support the likelihood that NutriCranGI may be more effective in managing H. pylori infections in humans (Vattem et al. 2004 Process Biochemistry), the company says.

BIOIBERICA PROMOTES GAIT STUDY
Initial results from the largest US study ever conducted on arthritis — the National Institute of Health?s GAIT study — show that the combination of CS b Bio-Active (chondroitin sulfate made by Bioiberica) and glucosamine is effective in treating moderate to severe knee pain. 1,258 osteoarthritis patients completed the double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They were divided into five groups: 1,200mg of chondroitin sulfate daily, 1,500mg of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate plus glucosamine (C/G), a standard pain medication called Celecoxib, or a placebo. The C/G combo significantly reduced pain compared to placebo, and outperformed Celecoxib among patients with the severest pain. The study was scheduled to appear in the New England Journal of Medicine in December.
CRANBERRY SEED OIL EXPANSION
Decas Botanical Synergies has expanded production capacity for OmegaCran, a 100 per cent natural cranberry seed oil. OmegaCran is a clear golden oil that delivers a pleasant butter flavour with a light fruit overtone, its maker says. Ideal for food applications, cosmetics or as a supplement, OmegaCran is a good source of antioxidants and vitamin E, and contains high-levels of omega-3s and omega-6s. OmegaCran also has the lowest level of saturated fat of the most commonly used oils, Decas says.
