Pure World elects new president
The chief operating officer of Pure World, Qun Yi Zheng, has been elected president of the company. Zheng has a doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry; he is an expert in the standardisation of botanical extracts and also helped design and build several chemical plants in China. Zheng first joined Pure World in 1996. Based in South Hackensack, New Jersey, Pure World produces more than 100 botanical extracts.
Palm oil refinery taking root in Rotterdam
Loders Croklaan, part of the Malaysian IOI Group, has announced its plans to build Europe?s largest palm oil refinery and fractionation plant in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2004 and take one year. Once operational, the plant will employ 70 people and be able to process 2,500 to 3,000 tons of palm oil a day.
Forbes Medi-Tech names chairman
Forbes Medi-Tech, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has appointed Dr Eric Topol as chairman of its medical and scientific advisory board, as well as scientific consultant for its pharmaceutical development programme. The company has also raised $10.75 million by private placement; the funds will be used in part to fund research on its FM-VP4 and FM-VPx library of compounds, which target cardiovascular disease and related disorders. Investors in the private placement include Great Point Partners LLC of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Biotechnology Development Fund IV of Palo Alto, California.
FDA reviews Nutrition 21 health claim petition
Nutrition 21 has filed a health claim petition with the US Food and Drug Administration requesting that the FDA allow use of eight dietary supplement health claims associating chromium picolinate supplementation with reduced risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and related disease conditions.?Nutrition 21 is a bioscience company in New York that researches the health-benefit claims of nutritional supplements.?It holds 24 patents for chromium compounds and their uses, and 11 other nutrition patents.?For more information, visit www.nutrition21.com.
New corporate marketing vice president for ADM
ADM, headquartered in Decatur, Illinois, has ap-pointed Graham Keen as its new vice president of corporate marketing. He will take charge of the company?s business-to-business and consumer brand advertising and marketing programmes. Keen has 27 years of experience in the food industry, most recently as director of soy foods for ADM?s US Natural Health and Nutrition Division.

USDA approves broader use of Sunett sweetener
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Sunett (acesulfame K) high intensity sweetener as a general purpose sweetener and flavour enhancer. Sunett can now be used in snack foods and cereals, jams and jellies, sauces, dips and dressings, canned or processed fruit and vegetables, dairy products, vitamins and other dietary supplements. The product, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar, had already been approved in the US for some uses, such as in beverages, baked goods and nutritional supplements. Sunett is manufactured by speciality ingredients supplier Nutrinova, which is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. The company has 14 affiliates around the world.
Chemi Nutraceuticals changes name to Chemi Nutra
Effective January 2004, Chemi Nutra became the new corporate name of Chemi Nutraceuticals. The reason for the name change was to harmonise the names of the two US business units founded by Chemi SpA, in Milan, Italy.
