New partnership for omega-3s
Puleva Biotech in Spain, a division of Ebro-Puleva and The Wright Group in Louisiana, has announced a joint marketing and development partnership aimed at creating new products and markets for omega-3 essential fatty acids based on Puleva Biotech's fish oils and Wright's formulation and marketing expertise. Wright will create a new product line of stable fish-oil powders based on its proprietary SuperCoat and SMART microencapsulation technologies. The products will be designed for use in conventional fortified foods, functional foods and beverages, and nutritional supplements applications.

Frutarom's Salvia seed oil
Frutarom has signed a marketing and distribution agreement with Magnetica Interactive Ltd, an Israeli company that produces plant oil enriched with omega-3s. The patent-protected salvia seed oil contains more than 50 per cent of the essential alpha-linolenic acid omega-3. The oil will be utilised as an ingredient for the functional foods market — without the common disadvantages of omega-3 supplements, including poor taste, unstable substance and high heavy-metals content.

Cognis adds fish-oils company
Cognis has completed its acquisition of Napro Pharma AS, a Norwegian manufacturer of high-quality omega-3 fish oils for the nutrition industry. Cognis is now working to fully integrate omega-3s into Cognis' product mix. As the world's largest producer of plant sterols and sterol esters, Cognis provides heart-health ingredients for a broad range of functional foods and dietary supplements. Omega-3s are a perfect complement to Cognis' Vegapure plant sterols and sterol esters, which have been clinically proven to lower cholesterol, the company says.

De-merger for EPAX
EPAX AS in Norway, formerly a division of Pronova Biocare, has de-merged from its parent company. A producer of concentrated omega-3 EPA/DHA oils in the business-to-business segment, EPAX AS will continue to produce its oils under the EPAX brand name.

Super CitriMax down under
InterHealth Nutraceuticals has appointed Pathway International Pty Ltd as its exclusive distributor for the Australian and New Zealand markets. This appointment coincides with the company's ability to sell its weight-loss product, Super CitriMax, in Australia. The country's Therapeutic Goods Administration recently approved use of Garcinia zeylanica, a South Asian fruit used to produce Super CitriMax. InterHealth's patented, all-natural Super CitriMax is the only product derived from Garcinia zeylanica extract that is clinically proven to boost serotonin levels and decrease body weight three-times greater than diet and exercise alone.

DMV opens sales office in Dubai
DMV International has added a new sales office to its worldwide network. Headed by Dutch national and area sales manager Jeroen van der Pol, the operation is based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The office functions as a direct sales contact for existing food and nutrition customers and will also support the development of new business in the region. Ultimately, local stocks and rapid on-site technical assistance will be offered from this location. DMV International is the Industrial Products Group of Campina, an international dairy co-operation focussing on the development, production, sales and distribution of dairy products.

New regional VP in Brazil
Chr Hansen has moved the regional management from headquarters in Denmark to Brazil. Sten Estrup has been appointed to head up the region as regional vice president for Central and South America — reporting to VP Carsten Hellmann, who is a part of corporate management. Estrup has worked with Chr Hansen since 2002, responsible for the Andean & Central America region, setting up local sales organisation and application capabilities through offices in Colombia, Peru and Panama. Estrup holds an MBA from Henley in the UK and a master's degree in dairy science.

TSI opens office in the UK
TSI Health Sciences has opened its first sales and marketing office in Europe. Adrian Lindridge has been appointed sales director, Europe, and will be based out of the new office in Rochdale, Lancashire, UK.?TSI Health Sciences produces and markets nutraceutical ingredients. It was founded in 1996 in Montana and has offices worldwide, including a 60-acre, fully integrated manufacturing, research, quality assurance and quality control campus in Jiangyin, China.

New vice president at BI
BI Nutraceuticals has promoted Rupa Das to vice president, global quality and compliance. In this role, Das will be responsible for developing, implementing and managing the quality assurance, quality control and regulatory systems for BI. Das has more than 13 years of quality and regulatory compliance management experience in the dietary supplements and personal-care product industries. She is a certified GMP auditor and is involved at different levels with leading industry organisations.

UK approval for phytosterol
The Procter &Gamble Co Food Ingredients has been granted a positive opinion by the UK Advisory Committee on Novel Food and Processes that Nutraphyl brand phytosterol products meet the criteria as being substantially equivalent to sterol products on the market today, and can therefore can be marketed within the European Union. Nutraphyl brand sterols can now be used in the manufacture of cholesterol lowering yellow fat spreads, salad dressings, milk type products, fermented milk-type products, soy drinks and spicy sauces.

Albion secures patent
Albion Advanced Nutrition has been granted a patent entitled "Dimetalhydroxy Malates," US patent # 6,706,904. This patent encompasses the composition of any dimetalhydroxy malates, as well as its method of production, and method of administration. It would cover any divalent metal that is nutritionally relevant, such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, and iron. In line with this patent, Albion is producing two new items: DiCalcium Malate and DiMagnesium Malate.

H Reisman acquired by LycoRed
LycoRed has acquired the assets and business of H Reisman Corp, a major player in the US natural carotenoid market. H Reisman was a subsidiary of Pharmachem Laboratories Ltd. The addition of H Reisman Corp's natural carotenoid product range provides synergy and expands LycoRed's position in the market. H Reisman Corp has extensive experience in added-value carotenoid formulations and manufacturing, and provides LycoRed with a US manufacturing base. LycoRed is a leading supplier of value-added ingredients, with a focus on natural carotenoids.

EpiCor gains GRAS status
Embria Health Sciences' high-metabolite immunogen ingredient, EpiCor, has successfully achieved self-determined GRAS status. EpiCor is an all-natural, high-metabolite immunogen that nourishes the body's immune system to strengthen resistance and maintain wellness. It is manufactured through a proprietary, multi-stage fermentation and drying process called MetaGen4, and is safe for everyday use. EpiCor is new to the human nutrition market, although it is backed by more than 60 years of experience in animal nutrition products.

GMPs for sports launched
NSF International's Dietary Supplements Certification Program has introduced a new Good Manufacturing Practices for Sport Program to minimise the risk that sports nutrition products contain banned substances. The GMP for Sport Program supports NSF's New Athletic Banned Substances Certification Program. GMP for Sport is an independent registration that demonstrates a manufacturer's compliance with GMPs.
