Winner at Ingredients Russia
ORAFTI, a maker of prebiotic ingredients, landed three prizes at the ?Ingredient of the Year 2004? ceremony at Ingredients Russia. The awards included a gold medal for its Raftiline HP and Raftiline GR inulins, and a silver medal for its oligofructose powder Raftilose P95.

DSM buys vitamins stake
DSM has reached an agreement with China?s leading pharmaceuticals group to buy its stake in a vitamins joint venture. Known as Roche Vitamins Limited, the venture was set up by DSM?s former owner, Roche, and the Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group (SPG) in 1996. DSM will buy SPG?s 36 per cent share in the business for around $13 million.

Ocean Spray expansion
Ocean Spray Ingredient Technology Group has opened a processing plant to meet growing European demand for its sweetened dried cranberries and flavoured fruit pieces. Located at its Massachusetts headquarters, the plant will produce 12 million pounds of cranberries and fruit pieces per year, with plans to double production capacity in the next year.

Indian FDA gives approval
Biotron Laboratories has received approval for mineral amino acid chelates by the Indian FDA. Established in 1979, Biotron specializes in the production of mineral chelates and complexes. Premier Nutraceuticals Private Limited has received final approval from the Indian FDA to market finished goods using Biotron?s mineral materials in exclusive compositional blends.

Scholle buys packaging firm
Scholle Corp has acquired 100 per cent of the shares of Flextainer SA, a French packaging company. The business will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Scholle and continue to trade as Flextainer at its headquarters in Schalbach, France.

Kyowa Hakko sales VP dies
Donald Blaine, vice president of sales for Kyowa Hakko USA, died Feb 12 in California. He was 53. For more than 25 years, Blaine worked in a wide range of industry sectors. He had worked for Kyowa Hakko since 1995.

Majewski joins Cardinal
Cardinal Nutrition, a manufacturer of methylsulfonylmethane, has hired Sharon Majewski as its director of regulatory affairs and quality assurance. She will serve as a liaison between Cardinal Nutrition and international regulatory agencies, as well as oversee regulatory approval for the company?s many product lines.

CLA patent approved
PharmaNutrients has been awarded a patent on a CLA-based composition, which includes 25 allowed claims addressing inflammation-related disorders. The company?s Tonalin CLA ingredient targets healthy body composition, but studies also suggest CLA may help maintain healthy heart and veins, healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and act as an antioxidant.

A US patent has been issued for kolla2 Chicken Sternum Cartilage Collagen Type II. Kolla2 allows the digestive system?s natural enzymes to break it down for absorption to repair joint cartilage while preserving the biological activity of chondroitin, glucosamine and collagen type II, its maker, Collagen Nutraceuticals, says.

Contaminant-free fish oil
Pharmavite?s Nature Made Fish Oil received a best-choice rating from Environmental Defense, a nonprofit that evaluated fish oil supplements for environmental contaminants. Pharmavite uses only wild, deep-water ocean fish, and tests each batch for contaminants, dioxins and heavy meals.

New ISP lab in Shanghai
International Specialty Products has opened a new food applications centre in Shanghai. Four key food segments will be focused on: dairy and frozen desserts, bakery, sauces and dressings, and processed meat, with an emphasis on Asian-type applications within each segment.
