Food for Health Ireland (FHI) has appointed Jens Bleiel, previously head of DSM Food Specialties’ functional food ingredients business, as its CEO.
FHI brings together the scientific and commercial expertise of Ireland’s leading research institutions and dairy processing companies: University College Cork, University College Dublin, University of Limerick, Teagasc’s Moorepark Food Research Centre, Carbery, Dairygold, Glanbia and the Kerry Group in a single research centre aimed at developing functional food products to improve people’s health and wellness.
Bleiel will be focussing on raising global awareness of FHI’s world class scientific research programme, the valuable contribution of dairy bioactives in tackling global health issues and the importance of the close relationship between the research institutes and commercial partners. This will, in turn, accelerate successful commercialisation of any new developments.
“Although FHI has an Irish focus, we have a distinctly global outlook,” comments Jens Bleiel. “We are keen to liaise with organisations from around the world that have similar objectives. Awareness of the value of milk-derived ingredients has grown significantly over recent years. Our ‘back to basics’ approach – molecular analysis and screening of the many different components that are present in milk – is designed to identify those components in a systematic way that offer the highest potential to address some of the world’s most pressing health issues. The partnership of research and industry will ensure that developed ingredients satisfy real consumer needs and facilitate their rapid commercialisation.”
